Scheduling Mission Trips for 2012

We are now scheduling mission groups for Spring/Summer 2012! (There are still spots left for winter if you act quickly!)

If you'd like to schedule your organization's group to come on a fantastic trip to minister in Cincinnati in 2012 please use the "Contact Us" Page and check your appropriate interest. When emailing us it will help to expedite your plans if you include the following information:

  • Your group size and age range
  • Your desired type of work (community, construction, etc.)
  • Your preferred dates (it helps to have a couple of options in case some are booked)

Thanks so much for partnering us with ministering to our urban neighbors!

Work and Witness Mission Trips

We have lots of opportunity available for mission groups to come join us in ministry this spring and summer. If your group is looking for an opportunity to serve in urban missions this year please contact us for more specific info on work projects, evangelism, and community development that's happening in Northside, Cincinnati this year!!

In addition we are still recruiting for youth mentors to help out in our Wednesday night program. This is such a fulfilling position to be in. If you are interested in helping our students to grow and learn please contact us. Positions are available to help with both kindergarten and junior high age groups.

The above photo is LeMontay now. The video below is the baptism of LeMontay and his sister 4 years ago. They are a prime example of why mentoring is important and how it is effective! LeMontay has been able to grow up these last 4 years in our church, he plays drums for our worship, he helps whenever he can, and he is motivated to go to college and grow into a successful adult. We are so proud of him and we know that the Church has played an important role in his life. We do hope you will consider playing this same role in the lives of our students at Cincy Urban Promise.

Work Day Success!

We are so thankful to all our volunteers who came out to our work day on Saturday! We got so much accomplished! We did a lot of the demolition that needed to be done, filled a 4 ton dumpster, and we able to get the bathroom floors in the church building just about finished!

We want you to know just how awesome this all is. You see, this isn't just a building we're rehabbing. This is an opportunity for growth in our congregation and the lives of people in Northside. This building has for years been a source of blight and crime in our neighborhood. It's been home to many squatters and a place to hide to do drugs. Kids have broken in just to have a place to hang out where their parent's can't see them and it looks just as bad on the outside as it does on the inside, adding to the sense that our neighborhood just isn't quite a "good" neighborhood.

Well, he's why it is a good neighborhood.

On Saturday, a few students from our youth ministry came to help work. These kids spent the majority of their formative years here in Northside and have spent the last four years in our ministry. Let us be the first to testify: They did as much work as at least one full grown man, if not more. They worked so hard! They felt so good about what they were doing and they had the opportunity to tangibly make a difference in their neighborhood!

And that's why we're here. Cincinnati Urban Promise exists to make a difference in the lives of families and youth in the city. It's not just about a building, it's not just about having "church" - it's about seeing lives changed through the love of Jesus.

Prayers for the Work Day!

Everybody pray for the weather on Saturday!

We have a great group of volunteers lined up and should be able to knock out a good deal of the demolition at this Saturday's work day. The news keeps going back and forth between rain and sunshine and since we all know that meteorologists don't control the weather - let's pray to the One who does control the weather: for sunshine!

Hope we'll see a lot of you there, RAIN or SHINE, Saturday between 10AM and 3PM!

4122 Kirby, lunch is provided.

Call Abe at 513-255-5582 for more info.

Falling Through the Cracks

These are photos of some of the kids who come to our ministry for various activities. Some only come to eat, others come and pay little to no attention to what's actually going on, and some come and are all ears listening and learning about Jesus.

Since we've been having Good News Club in the elementary school this year our ministry has been opened to even more students hearing about Jesus. This has also given us the opportunity to see our kids in a different environment, to get to know how things are really going in school beyond what they are willing to tell us at the church or out on the street.

So I've (this is Joni speaking) started to wonder why it is that every child that brings me a report card to show off has at least 1 "F"? I mean, shouldn't there be at least one child that can show me a report card where they are passing everything? It seems that even with the after school tutoring, the Boys and Girls Club, Whiz Kids, and our SAY Yes tutoring - that kids are still constantly falling through the cracks.

A young man who has come to our ministry since it's beginning (we'll call him "N") sat down next to me at club yesterday and said he had left his report card in the auditorium. I found it and brought it to him only to see that he has straight F's. This year is beyond saving for him at this point, there is no way possible for him to pass this grade. So he's feeling pretty hopeless.

N is probably the sweetest, most tenderhearted kid I know, but he's falling through the cracks every where he goes. Including Cincinnati Urban Promise. He's hyperactive, he's defiant at times, he's has difficulty paying attention, and his parents are not actively involved in his life or the life of his siblings. He needs help. If he continues down his current path he won't even have the kind of life skills it requires to survive life on the streets. He'll end up a victim of violence or in prison.

You see, there are a lot of groups doing a lot of wonderful things in the city. But each of these groups has the same problem: lack of Christ-like volunteers. There is only so much that one program can do if they don't have enough workers. When you have tons of kids in need of help, and only a handful of people to help those kids - you end up with a huge number of children who just get left out.

In Northside, we have a set of kids who are at every free meal offered. The same kids, the same days, every week. They are thin from lack of nutrition, they are rowdy, and they have difficultly trusting and building relationships with adults. At this point, who can blame them. Every where they go they only see the same 5-7 adults. So, don't you think they start to think that maybe there is no one else that cares?

In a neighborhood that does its best to offer Jesus and care to the children in this neighborhood, the facts are plain. We don't have enough help. We have to do something to help kids like "N" who have become hopeless, who have given up even trying because they don't have anyone to guide them.

There is no way that a small handful of adults can build the kind of deep relationships necessary to disciple, tutor, and mentor these children.

So here's what we're asking.

For starters:
  • 4 adult volunteers for our Wednesday meal and discipleship program
  • 4 adult volunteers to start and teach a Pre-school/Kindergarten class during our Wednesday program
  • 10 adult volunteers to mentor students, coming to spend time with them at least once a week.
You don't have to live in Northside to do these things. You don't have to give up a huge amount of time to do these things. You don't even have to be currently involved in our ministry. You just have to volunteer. You just have to be willing to give of yourself to help a child get to know Jesus and have a chance at success.

If you're interested please use our contact us page to let us know!

We need your help on February 26th!

We are so excited for February 26th! We cannot wait to start working on Emmanuel House and get it up and running! We wanted to share some photos of the inside of the building so you could see exactly what we need help with and so you can be praying for God to send us the people needed to get the work done!

The photo at the top of this email is the 2nd floor area that we will be turning into an apartment for our interns. We are so excited to be welcoming our first intern into our ministry this summer. Luckily she's local and won't need to live in Emmanuel House, but think of the possibilities for students to learn about what it means to live in an urban area and serve? Such exciting possibilities!

The following photos are of the other parts of the building. Areas for a local business to rent and provide jobs and income for the ministry. Areas for men's transitional housing to help men get on their feet. Areas for a food co-op and a community computer lab! All such exciting possibilities. So be sure to use your imagination and vision! :-)

So as you can see, WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Look at the invite below and come to the work day on February 26th!

Emmanuel House Work Day!

We closed on this building about a month ago. We're going to need a TON of help to get it cleaned and fixed up for use. We need plumbers, electricians, etc. etc. And we need anybody and everybody who can to come help do demo, paint, etc. Let us know if you wanna help! The building is going to hold apartments for interns, a food co-op, some kind of business, and some transitional living space for men struggling to get on their own two feet. We really hope God will use it to build His Kingdom in Northside!

We're going to have a major demo and clean up day on February 26th from 10am-3pm and we'll be painting the exterior, cleaning the interior and exterior, and getting ready to start putting things together. We'd love to have your help! Lunch is provided and probably some yummy snacks too.

If you can donate towards the cost of supplies that's awesome and if you can't come but still want to donate that's equally awesome. We definitely are trusting God to provide the funds to make this rehab possible!

If you go to a church or participate in any kind of corporate Jesus worship please feel more than free to rope in all your friends and brothers and sisters in Jesus to come help! (This means your Sunday school class, small group, men's group, youth group, whatever-kind-of-group-makes-your-boat-float!)

OH, AND SPREAD THIS INVITE AROUND!

Thanks!

Mattresses for Agape Community Centre in Uganda!

Agape Kids

We know that sometimes it seems like we are constantly in fundraising mode here at Cincy Urban Promise. And that is some what true. While we are a ministry that focuses on serving the poor in our community we know that in the eyes of those living in developing countries, even our poor here in the US are not truly poor in the eyes of most of the world.

Cincy Urban Promise has partnered together in prayer and what little financial support we can provide with Agape Community Centre in Uganda! We met Joseph at the CCDA conference two years ago and it was the beginning of a great friendship. This past year Joseph was able to visit us and preach to us and show us information about his beautiful community center.

At Agape they do many things, but the main thing is to care for poor and orphaned children through sponsorship. We were blessed just recently to be able to provide funds for Agape to purchase new mattresses for the children in their new center! We were able to purchase 30 mattresses and bedding!

We wanted to share this great news with you and share some photos! We want you to know our heart for the poor and the orphaned go beyond our city, God's heart is for the poor of the world - and it's our job to reach them! If you want more info on Agape click here.

We also have some Ugandan magazine beaded necklaces for sale in support of Agape. They are $15 each. Let us know if you're interested in supporting Agape in this way!

Good News Club!

This year was finally the year we got to start a Good News Club in Chase Elementary school! A GNC is a Bible club that teaches the basics of the gospel to elementary students with fun songs, memory verse games, snacks, and all the things kids love! We are so thankful to be able to share Christ in the elementary school. Our club goes through March this year and we've had 6 students so far give their lives to Christ. Pray about joining us next school year to volunteer to teach, help with snacks, and just love on students!

Here's some pics from today:

New Website!

We've decided to take a different approach to our web presence and use a blog instead of a website! We think this will do a couple different things:

1. Allow people to follow the workings of our ministry more closely.
2. Give you all a way to collaborate with us in ministry.
3. Allow us to more quickly share urgent prayer needs!

We hope everyone will be encouraged by the content we share here and will be motivated to get involved in sharing Christ in the inner city!
